Joel Beery was born in 1983 in Fresno California. In 2009 he married his wife and their deep rooted family ties have kept them calling the central valley “home” for the past four years. Joel’s artistic ability was obvious from a very young age as he spent the majority of his free time with a pencil and paper recreating everything he saw. His educational journey began as he attended Fresno City College to complete his G.E; he later transferred to Fresno State where in 2008 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design. Joel excelled in all of his art and illustration classes and was recognized for his abilities at the senior graphic design show by receiving the award of Excellence in Illustration.

As an artist Joel prides himself in accepting the challenges that come with painting a wide variety of subject matter. Although each painting is different, they all possess the same ability to draw you in for a closer look at the details.

In May of 2012, he was approached by the President’s Cabinet of Fresno State to paint the official Portrait of President John D. Welty. With this being his first commissioned portrait, he accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm. The outcome of the portrait was well received by the President as well as his colleagues. Joel’s portrait of President Welty gained a considerable amount of recognition as it was featured in the Central Valley Magazine in an article titled “Signature Commission” as well as the fall 2013 Fresno State Magazine in an article titled “Keeping it all in the (Fresno State) Family”.

Joel currently works in the Brand Strategy and Marketing department at Fresno State as a graphic designer and is thankful that he is able to use his artist ability throughout his designs. You can often see his illustrations and artwork in the Fresno State Magazine: fresnostate.edu/magazine
